Where Does Winning Live?

I’ve coached long enough to know the answer.

  • It’s not talent alone.

  • It’s not fancy facilities.

  • It’s not even having the perfect game plan.

Winning lives in the little extra.

The extra rep when others stop.
The extra focus when distractions creep in.
The extra energy on a long day.
The extra accountability to say, “That’s on me.”
The extra effort when your body says, “I’m done.”

That’s where the edge is. That’s where winning hides.

Not in loud speeches or viral quotes, but in the quiet moments when no one is watching and you choose to go just a little further.

What It Looks Like on a Team:

  • A player stays after to fix one footwork mistake

  • A leader checks in with a struggling teammate without being asked

  • A coach rewatches the film for one more adjustment

  • A captain picks up water bottles without being told

None of these things wins a game on their own.

But they shape who your team becomes.

Because when the standard becomes “a little extra,” you start to separate from the teams who settle for enough.

Take This to Your Team

Ask your players this question:

“Where does winning live in your game right now?”

Is it one extra made free throw?
One extra close-out?
One extra minute of film?

Have them write down one “extra” they can own this week.

Then follow up. Celebrate it. Build it into your culture.

Closing Thought

You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to have it all figured out.

You just need to go a little further than most are willing to. Because that’s where winning lives.
