💭 ONE THOUGHT
Two Things Great Leaders Do

Leadership lives in the gap between what people believe and what they actually do.

In the 2016 NBA Finals, the Cavs were down 3–1. Everyone counted them out.

Not LeBron James.

Before Game 5, LeBron didn’t deliver a fiery speech. He calmly reminded his teammates:

“We’ve been here. We’ve prepared for this. All we need to do is win one.”

LeBron James

It wasn’t hype. It was belief. And after they won Game 5?

He shifted into action:

  • Demanding defensive switches

  • Setting the tone in huddles

  • Leading by example with back-to-back 41-point games

LeBron didn’t just shape their mindset. He guided their action and sparked a historic comeback.

The best leadership starts before the play ever begins.

Have you ever noticed how the best leaders are remembered not just for what they said but also for what they inspired others to do?

Good leaders influence mindsets. Great leaders guide to action.

It’s not about titles, authority, or being the loudest voice in the room; it’s always about IMPACT.

Part 1: Influence Mindset

Leadership begins in the mind. As a coach, your ability to shape how your team thinks and feels is your most powerful tool.

  • When the pressure is on, leaders calm the storm.

  • When confidence is shaky, leaders build belief.

  • When doubt creeps in, leaders inspire hope.

Influencing mindset isn’t about motivation. It’s about creating a perspective.

  • A belief in the process.

  • A commitment to the team.

  • A vision for what’s possible.

Start by modeling the mindset you want to see. Confidence. Resilience. Optimism.

Always remember that your energy is contagious.

Think about a coach who, during a timeout in overtime, reminds the team of their strengths: 'We’ve prepared for this moment. Stick to the plan and trust each other.'

These little moments create a mindset that instills confidence in your team when they need it most.

Part 2: Guide Action

Mindset without action is wasted potential. Great coaches always turn belief into behavior.

This means providing:

  1. Clarity: A clear path forward with defined goals.

  2. Support: The resources and encouragement to move forward.

  3. Accountability: The expectation to follow through.

Guiding action is about consistency, not control. You don’t need to micromanage; your job is to empower.

When I think of action, I often think of coaches who put their leaders in a position to lead.

These coaches are purposeful in creating player-led teams.

They build the mindset and then create chances to lead: drills, pregame talks, weight room sessions, and more.

They set the standard, then step back and let them rise to it.

The Takeaway:

Good leaders influence how people think. Great leaders influence how people act.

As coaches, it’s our job to do both:

Always remember that leadership isn’t about you; it’s about the impact you have on others.

Reflection for Coaches and Leaders:

  • How are you shaping the mindset of your team?

  • Are you giving clear direction to turn belief into action?

  • What’s one way you can influence and guide better this week?

Leadership is a privilege; impacting how someone thinks and acts is no small thing. Handle it with care.

Want to go deeper? Team Leader OS is your blueprint for building belief and turning it into action.

Keep leading with impact,
Greg
