💭 ONE THOUGHT
The Hidden Side of Coaching

Most people see the scoreboard. They see the huddles, the highlights, the celebrations.
What they don’t see is everything else.
Coaching is emotional. It’s exhausting. It’s deeply personal. And most of what makes it special happens when no one is watching.
The hard truth of coaching: it’ll test your patience, your purpose, and your heart. But the impact you make lasts far beyond the wins.

Here are five parts of coaching that most people never see.
1. The Conversations After Everyone Leaves
The talk with the kid who’s struggling at home.
The one who just lost confidence.
The senior who found out they won’t start again.
Those quiet moments are where real coaching happens.
2. The Emotional Rollercoaster
One parent message. One bad practice. One injury.
Your day can swing fast.
But you still show up with energy and focus.
That consistency is leadership.
3. The Weight of Every Decision
Every lineup, sub, and timeout affects more than strategy.
It affects people.
You know it. You feel it. You carry it.
4. The Hours No One Counts
Film sessions. Practice plans.
The texts checking in on players.
The mental time replaying the night before.
Coaching doesn’t end when the lights go off.
5. The Question That Never Goes Away: “Am I Doing Enough?”
You pour everything into your players. But there’s always that voice asking if it’s enough.
That tension never really leaves.
Watch Nick Saban discuss coaching:
The hidden side of coaching isn’t glamorous. It’s emotional, draining, and sometimes lonely. But it’s also where the real impact lives.
The text you send that lifts a kid up.
The tough conversation that builds character.
The quiet belief in a player who has stopped believing in themselves.
That’s the real work.
That’s the hidden side of coaching.
Reflective Question: What part of your coaching do people never see, but matters most?
Good Luck!
Greg

“Better Coach OS is easily one of the best coaching resources I have ever come across. I wish I would've had this 10 years ago. Each module is loaded with takeaways and practical resources, yet the presentation moves efficiently from one topic to the next. I think all coaches will learn from Better Coach OS; however, I think this is a must-have for any young coach. You never arrive.”

Life works out if you let it.
Don’t force things.
You are going to experience some tremendous highs and some depressing lows.
But life works out. Ride the waves the best you can.
Figure out what actually matters to you, and work hard towards that.
