💭 ONE THOUGHT
The Foxhole Test

In sports, just like in life, there are moments when the pressure is overwhelming, the stakes are high, and things aren’t going your way.

It’s during these moments that you find out who you can really count on.

This is where the Foxhole Test comes into play.

The idea is simple.

If you were in a tough, high-pressure situation—a “foxhole”—who would you want in there with you?

Who do you trust to stand by your side when things get hard?

This test isn’t about talent or skill; it’s about trust, loyalty, and grit.

These qualities often don’t appear on stat sheets or during easy games, but they’re the most important when adversity strikes.

What is the Foxhole Test?

Check out how legendary basketball coach Don Meyer used the Foxhole Test with his team.

How to Use the Foxhole Test with Your Team

  1. Assess Your Players - Who are your “foxhole players”? These are the ones who show up when it matters most, remain calm under pressure, and are willing to do the dirty work to help the team succeed. Identify those players and celebrate their mindset.

  2. Build Team Trust - Encourage your players to support one another and earn each other’s trust. Make it a team goal that every player wants their teammates by their side in the “foxhole.” Focus on team-building activities that emphasize reliability and accountability.

  3. Create a Foxhole Mentality - Emphasize the importance of mental toughness and grit. Whether in practice or games, continually reinforce the idea that every player should be the kind of teammate who can be counted on in tough situations. Make sure they know it’s not about individual performance but about trust and commitment to the team.

Why the Foxhole Test Matters

The Foxhole Test cuts through the noise and reveals who your real teammates are.

When things get tough, talent alone won’t get you through—it’s the players who have your back, who stay focused under pressure, and who refuse to give up that make the difference.

As a coach, you aim to build a team where everyone passes the Foxhole Test.

This starts with developing trust, fostering a sense of accountability, and pushing your players to be not just great athletes but great teammates.

When you have a team full of players who would choose each other for the foxhole, you’ve built something special.

These are the teams that win championships, not just because of their talent but because of their bond.

Summary…

  • Ask your team: “Who do you want in your foxhole?”

  • Challenge them to become the kind of teammate who others would choose.

  • Develop trust and grit so that when adversity strikes, your team will stand strong together.

Build a team that doesn’t just play together but is ready to stand side-by-side in the toughest moments.

Good Luck!
