💭ONE THOUGHT
Leadership is a Choice

As coaches, we all want better leaders.

I often hear, “If only ‘Johnny’ was a leader!”

Yep, If Only.

You know what they say, If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas.

Leadership is a process. It is a journey for everyone, but it is especially challenging for high school students.

Leadership is not a position or title; It is a conscious, daily choice that individuals make to step up and take action.

For this reason, the choice to lead is the first foundation of leadership development.

It is the first step in my systemic and practical leadership program, The Team Leader OS, which hundreds of coaches use with their teams.

Championship teams are usually player-led.

So what are these choices of leadership that people have to make? I believe there are two.

  1. Choice #1: Do I have the mindset of a leader?

  2. Choice #2: Do I accept the responsibility of leadership?

Let’s dive in…

1. Leading by Choice:  MINDSET.

Step one in Leading by Choice is to choose your mindset.

Mindset is a person's attitudes, beliefs, and ways of thinking. Mindset is critical for all athletes and especially important for leaders.

First, leaders must have a growth-based mindset. They must view every opportunity to learn and grow.  Leaders must be positive and bring positive energy to all they do.

Second, mindset also refers to failure. Leaders must have a healthy approach to failure. Like a growth mindset, failure must be viewed as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Why is mindset so critical to leadership?

Because it is foundational.

Have you ever seen a negative person or a person with a fixed mindset lead others? It simply does not work.

Mindset is the critical first step in developing as a leader.

2. Leading by Choice:  RESPONSIBILITY.

Choosing leadership also means accepting the responsibility that comes with it.

This is the second choice in the process.

Leadership is not easy. You are often on an island, and you sometimes have to make tough decisions and hold others accountable.

Leaders must own this when they become leaders. They must be okay with making tough decisions or standing alone.

Every day.

“When you know better, you have to do better.”

Maya Angelou

Choosing to lead means taking responsibility for all that comes after. This is one reason we have so few leaders. Many are not willing to get past this step.

So why choose to lead?

Choosing to be a leader brings numerous benefits.

  • It paves the way for success, both personally and as a team.

  • Leaders find fulfillment and happiness in their roles because they know they are doing the right thing.

  • Personal growth is a natural outcome of choosing leadership, as it challenges individuals to develop new skills and perspectives.

  • Leaders earn the respect of others and form meaningful connections with teammates, coaches, and peers.

  • Ultimately, embracing leadership brings personal satisfaction and a sense of purpose.
