ONE THOUGHT

Wishing you all a Happy New Year!

As we all embark on a new year, I want to wish you all health, happiness, PERSISTENCE, and success in 2023!

And now, on to today's newsletter!

Why does Persistence Matter?

Persistence Pays.

Nothing worthwhile comes easy. Everything you want is on the other side of HARD: Hard work, Perseverance, Persistence, and Relentless Consistency!

Persistence is the ability to sustain effort and motivation over time. Persistence is a behavior trait that lays the foundation for productivity and success.

What are some of the greatest ways to teach others to be persistent?

Youth Sports!

As coaches, this is one the most important life skills we teach.

There are no shortcuts in life, especially in the world of competition and athletics. We live in a world today where so many people want an immediate reward for the work done without going through the process of the work.

We must all remember that "The Process is the Prize" and that "Persistence Pays."

Great athletes and coaches fully understand that the winning, the trophy, and the championship, are all fleeting.

When you are all said and done, it is the process of getting there that is remembered. This is why sports, training, and work ethic are so valuable to young people.

Persistence Pays.

This is why our basketball program uses the mantra "No Deposit - No Return."

We want to create a culture where players understand that work ethic and commitment are our top priorities. A culture where we create an β€œeverything is earned” mindset.

We want the message sent to our players that "Persistence Pays." The harder you work, the more it will pay off in the long run.

One of the best examples of persistence comes from what many say is the best coach in the history of all sports, John Wooden.

Everyone knows of Coach Wooden's 10 National Championships in 12 years while at UCLA.

Many people forget or do not know that it took Coach Wooden 29 years to win his first National Championship... 29 YEARS!

In 1963 Arizona State defeated UCLA 93-79 in the first game of the NCAA Tournament. The final score made the game sound closer than it was.

Arizona State was leading 62-31 at halftime.

That season was Coach Wooden’s 16th at UCLA, and this appearance was his fifth NCAA tournament.

In those tournament games, Coach Wooden had a dismal record of only three wins and nine losses.

In his book Pyramid of Success, written with Jay Carty, Coach Wooden summed it up this way:

"A mindset of immediate gratification has permeated our society. Simply put, people are impatient. They want too much too soon. They have lost sight of an overarching truth: In life, worthwhile accomplishments and acquisitions take time. Usually, the better the reward, the more time it takes to acquire it."

John Wooden

How do coaches like John Wooden or elite athletes stay persistent? Here are 6 critical skills that persistent people have.

  1. Work Ethic: Persistent people know that all things happen through hard work. They believe they will reap the benefits over time. They have a blue-collar mindset.

  2. Process Orientated: Persistent people trust the process. They have a "the process is the prize" mentality.

  3. Habits Focus: Persistent people know that "Habits Win". They know that life and success is about focusing on daily habits over time. They follow the 10,000 hour rule and know that they will win in the long run.

  4. Optimism: Persistent people always believe in hope. They know better days are ahead. It keeps them moving forward toward their goals.

  5. Resilience: Persistent people are able to overcome bumps in the road. They have learned the critical skill of resilience.

  6. View of Failure: Persistent athletes have a "failure does not exist" mindset. They are always learning and growing.

John Wooden is a perfect example of persistence paying off. I am sure there were times in his tenure at UCLA when they wondered if they had the right coach or if they should go in "another direction."

Stories like his are reminders that we need to stay the course with relentless consistency and persistence.

Persistence is a choice. A choice to trust the process. A choice to appreciate the grind. Being persistent is knowing you will be better in the end.

Choose your goals in 2023, but focus on 1-3 Small, Daily Habits that move you in the direction of your goal.

Once you have your small habits. Commit to being incredibly PERSISTENT in sticking to these habits.

Good Luck in 2023!

Be Persistent!
