Most Parent Issues Are Predictable

Over 30 years in coaching and school leadership, I’ve learned something important:
Most parent communication issues are predictable.
They usually begin with:
• unclear expectations
• communication gaps
• emotional reactions
• and silence that turns into assumptions
And unfortunately, most coaches were never taught how to lead this part of the job.

Early in my coaching career, I had a player quit after only a few practices. We had a standard in our program: if you quit, you quit.
The challenge? The player’s parent was on the school board.
As a young coach, I remember feeling the pressure of that situation immediately. It could have easily turned emotional, personal, or political.
But it also taught me an important lesson very quickly:
Clear standards and clear communication matter.
When expectations are unclear, emotions usually fill the gap.
What’s interesting is how things can come full circle. Years later, that same school board member was on the interview committee to hire the new principal. Guess who was interviewing for the position? ME.
