💭 ONE THOUGHT
Leadership is a Skill, Not a Trait

Many people treat leadership like something you either have or you don't.
That's a mistake.
Leadership is not a title. It's not personality. It's a skill.
And like any skill, it can be trained.
The same way you train a jump shot, a golf swing, or a press break. You train leadership through intentional reps.
Here are 5 ways to do it with your athletes.
1. Give them a system, not random lessons
Random leadership talks don't stick. Players need structure, just as they need a playbook.
Pick a framework. Any framework. Then teach it one step at a time.
Think of it like a ladder. Athletes climb one rung at a time instead of jumping randomly between skills.
But here's the rung we forget most.
Choosing to lead. That's the first step, and most athletes never take it on purpose.
2. Make them reflect
You don't grow just by experiencing something. You grow when you reflect on it.
Ask your athletes questions like:
How has peer pressure shaped the teams you've been on?
Which leadership style fits your strengths best?
This turns practices, games, and even mistakes into teachable moments. Reflection creates self-awareness. Self-awareness creates better leaders.
3. Have real conversations
Great leaders are forged in discussion.
Use real scenarios before they happen for real. Try this one:
Your team is getting media attention and big expectations. As the leader, you have to keep everyone focused and block out the noise. What do you say?
Instead of waiting for that moment to blow up in real life, athletes practice the decision in advance.
Just like scrimmaging. They build confidence before the game is on the line.
4. Put tools in their hands
Talk alone isn't enough. Leaders need something they can come back to.
Give them a simple roadmap. Trust. Conflict. Accountability. Lay out the checkpoints so progress is visible.
That's exactly what the Team Leader Roadmap does. It's a GPS for your athletes, mapping the key checkpoints they hit as they grow.
Coaches can point to it in team meetings. Athletes can measure themselves against it. It's not theory. It's a tool in their hands.
5. Get them to commit
Nothing changes until someone commits.
Have your athletes write it down. A growth plan. A commitment statement. Their name on the line.
When they sign it, leadership shifts from "I should" to "I will."
Those daily commitments build consistency. And consistency builds trust.
Closing Thought
Leadership isn't magic. It's training.
Give athletes a system, space to reflect, honest conversations, real tools, and a growth plan. You turn leadership from a buzzword into something they practice daily.
It doesn't matter what tool you use. What matters is that you use one.
And it starts with the step we forget most.
Choosing to lead.
Be great.
