💭ONE THOUGHT
Comparison and Envy

What is the most significant way to sabotage your joy as a coach, an athlete, or a sports parent?

Comparison.

Envy.

I recently read online a post from George Mack, who provided a great equation on happiness:

Happiness = Quality of Life - Envy

"A rich man is anyone who earns more than his wife's sister's husband"

There is so much truth to this equation. Envy can take away all of the potential joy we can have.

What is the difference between envy and inspiration?

  • Inspiration means looking at someone else and their example as a model for you to get better and grow.

  • Envy is looking at someone else and their example to compare or be jealous.

One makes you better, and one makes you worse.

It is a critical mindset that we all have to choose.

Apply this to coaches, athletes, and sports parents.

Coaches: You are struggling to win games, you may lack talent, etc. You look at a neighboring coach who is consistently winning. How do you respond? Are you envious? Do you compare, or does this motivate you?

Athletes: Do you look at the success of others and wish that could be you? Do you use that to motivate and drive you to do more? Do you pass it off as they are just lucky and more talented? Do you see the work they put in? Do you celebrate your teammate’s success?

Sport Parents: Do you compare your child to others? Do you downplay the success? Do you make excuses for your child? Do you have joy in the success of others?

How we answer these questions is critical in our approach to competition and success.

One of my favorite quotes is the following:

“Comparison is the thief of joy.”

You see, this is the mindset of being a winner.

Winners don’t compare. They get better. They go to work.

Winners see others as motivation to INSPIRE themselves to do more and put in more time. It drives them to be their best.

It is the mindset of “No Deposit - No Return!”

Do you have the mentality of a winner?

Choose wisely.

Good luck!
