💭 ONE THOUGHT
Coaching Gen Z Without Lowering the Bar

Most coaches I talk to have a similar frustration.
They've got a locker room full of talented kids who won't listen, don't respond to the same things that worked five years ago, and seem allergic to being told what to do.
So the question becomes: do I lower the bar to keep them? Or do I hold the standard and watch the roster thin out?
Here's what I've found. That's a false choice.
You don't have to lower the bar for Gen Z athletes. But you do have to understand who you're coaching.
Here's what's actually going on:
1. They need the why, not as an excuse, but as fuel.
Gen Z grew up with access to every answer in the world at their fingertips. They don't respond to "because I said so" because they've been trained to question everything. That's not disrespect. That's their operating system.
When you explain why the standard exists, what it builds, and where it's taking them, they lock in. Fast.
The coaches who are struggling right now are the ones who expect compliance without context.
2. They need to know they're seen as a person, not just a player.
Research on Gen Z athletes is clear: they perform at a higher level when they believe their coach actually knows them.
That doesn't mean you run a therapy session. It means you know their name, their story, and what they're working toward.
A 30-second conversation in the hallway does more than a 30-minute film session if that kid doesn't trust you yet.
3. They've been told their whole lives that hard things are optional.
Participation trophies. Travel teams that never cut anyone. Club coaches who prioritized development over accountability.
By the time they get to you, some of them genuinely don't know how to respond to a coach who holds the line.
That's not their fault. That's your opportunity.
Here's what the best coaches are doing right now:
They're holding the exact same standards they always have. Zero exceptions. Everyone is held accountable.
But they're investing more time in the front end. Explaining the why. Building the relationship. Making sure their athletes know the standard comes from a place of genuine investment in their growth.
And then they hold it. No wavering.
That's the approach that's winning right now.
The result? Gen Z athletes who are some of the most competitive, hardest-working players they've ever coached.
Because when a kid understands the standard AND trusts the coach setting it, they don't just meet it. They chase it.
Wrap Up
You don't coach around your athletes' generation. You coach through it.
Hold the bar.
Build the relationship.
Do both.
That's how you win right now.
Be great!
Greg
P.S. If you want a system to develop leaders from your Gen Z roster, without lowering the bar, the Team Leader OS is built for this.
