💭 ONE THOUGHT

Over my career, I have been very fortunate to be a part of many winning teams and programs.

As a head basketball coach, our teams have been to the state tournament three times and won 11 conference championships, including nine straight.

As an assistant coach, our teams have been to the state tournament twice as a football coach and twice as a golf coach.

I have seen it as a parent as well. My daughter went to the state tournament three times, and her teams won two state championships.

Winning is hard.

Winning is so much more than the final score; it’s about being worthy of the victory.

Check out this video below from the Georgia Tech Strength Coach on Winning.

You can't just show up and expect to win. There is so much that goes into being a winner and being worthy of winning.

Everything is earned.

It is earned in the day-to-day grind and the day-to-day habits that athletes and teams hold.

It is about creating a culture with clear standards of excellence and holding kids accountable to these standards. Remember, Culture Wins!

So, how do you become worthy of winning?

Here are 7 Ways to be Worthy of Winning…

1. Choose to Compete: True winners embrace competition and never back down. Competing allows you to hone your skills and create a competitive spirit. It allows you to step into the arena with the heart of a warrior.

2. Work HARD: This may sound obvious, but effort is the backbone of success. Not everyone works hard, but working hard allows you to push your limits daily. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard. Dedicate yourself to the grind; excellence will follow. Always live by the mindset of "No Deposit—No Return!"

"I think that the good and the great are only separated by the willingness to sacrifice."

Kareem Abdul Jabbar

3. Think WE > ME: Team success always trumps individual glory. Support and elevate your teammates with a we first mindset. Collective achievement leads to shared success. Value unity and champion the team’s goals above your own.

4. Trust the Process: Progress requires patience. Believe in your training, habits, and strategy. Growth and success are gradual. Embrace each step of your journey with faith and persistence. And remember that the process is the prize.

5. Create Great Habits: Winning habits lay the foundation for victory. Regular, positive routines lead to gradual improvement. Excellence, then, isn’t an act but a habit. Cultivate habits that propel you towards your goals.

6. Keep a Positive Attitude: Attitude influences the outcome. Stay optimistic through the ups and downs. Positivity is contagious and empowering. Maintain an upbeat outlook to inspire yourself and others.

“Coaches have the power to change lives by fostering resilience and instilling a never-give-up attitude.”

Angela Duckworth

7. Show up with Relentless Consistency: Consistency is key to breakthroughs. Be relentless in your effort and commitment. Relentless consistency turns ordinary into extraordinary. Commit every day; let persistence be your trademark.

Everything is earned.

Earn your wins by embodying these principles. Be worthy of winning in sports and life!
