šŸ’ ONE THOUGHT
Winners Win. But Why?

On Monday night, J.J. McCarthy, the Vikings' quarterback, started his first NFL game at just 22 years old.

It wasn’t pretty early. He struggled in the first half. The Vikings looked flat. The pressure was high.

And then the fourth quarter came.
McCarthy rallied the Vikings with three touchdowns.
Poised. Confident. Unshaken.

That’s who he is.
He’s a winner.

This is nothing new. McCarthy went 36–2 in high school and 27–1 in college, losing only three games in his entire starting career before the NFL. His record speaks for itself.

But why? What separates winners from everyone else?

Why do winners win?

  1. Intense focus. Winners know how to drown out the noise. Pressure, criticism, and distractions don’t shake them because their eyes are locked on the goal. Focus gives them clarity when others panic. McCarthy showed this Monday night. After a shaky start, he blocked out the boos and frustration, locked in, and delivered three straight touchdown drives.

  2. Leadership. It’s not just about personal performance; it’s about elevating everyone else. Winners bring energy, belief, and accountability that ripple through a team. Others play better because of their presence.McCarthy’s calm presence in the huddle lifted the Vikings. His teammates played with more belief because their young QB showed them he wasn’t rattled.

  1. Poise and confidence. Winners don’t crumble in big moments. Their body language stays steady, their decision-making sharp. Confidence isn’t arrogance; it’s trust in the work they’ve already put in. Even down in the fourth quarter, McCarthy’s body language never changed. His confidence steadied the team when panic could have taken over.

  2. Preparation. Champions are built when no one’s watching. Film, practice habits, weight room, nutrition… winners commit to the small, boring, consistent work that pays off when the lights are brightest. You don’t step into the NFL at 22 and play like that unless you’ve built strong habits long before.

  3. The little things. Whether it’s showing up early, sprinting through the line, or being locked into the huddle, winners know that details compound. They don’t take shortcuts. They build habits. Every rep McCarthy took in practice prepared him for that moment. The little things: footwork, timing, communication, all added up when it mattered most.

  4. Learning from mistakes. Winners fail, but they fail forward. Every mistake is feedback. They correct, adapt, and improve instead of repeating the same errors over and over. After a rough first half, McCarthy didn’t fold. He adjusted. He made better reads, used his legs, and learned from what wasn’t working. That’s why he finished strong.

Winners aren’t perfect. They aren’t lucky.
They are prepared. They are confident. They are leaders.

That’s why winners win.

Reflection for Coaches & Leaders:

  • What little things can you and your team sharpen this week that will help you win more consistently?

  • How can you model poise and confidence when your team faces adversity?

  • Are you teaching your athletes how to learn from mistakes—or are you letting mistakes define them?

Winners win. And it’s not by accident.

Good luck!
Greg
