The Words That Build Your Team
The best programs don’t just play the same way.
They talk the same way.
They have a shared language.
Walk into a great program, and you’ll hear it immediately:
“Next Play.”
“Handle Hard.”
“Be Present”
“Two Feet.”
“We Over Me.”
Simple. Clear. Repeatable.
That’s not by accident. That’s design.
Why Shared Language Matters
Culture isn’t built in big speeches, motivational handouts, or the locker room posters. It’s built in the words you repeat every day.
“We are what we emphasize.”
Shared language does three things:
Speeds up thinking – Players don’t hesitate. They react.
Creates alignment – Everyone knows what matters.
Raises standards – The words become the expectation.
When pressure hits, long explanations don’t work.
Short phrases do.
What Most Coaches Miss
Most coaches spend inordinate amounts of time on offense, defense, and game plans.
But they rarely define the language of their team or program culture.
So what happens?
Messages become inconsistent
Standards get unclear
Leadership becomes accidental
If your players don’t know what to say, they won’t know how to lead when it matters most.
One of the most important jobs of a coach is to help give them the language to use.
Build Your Culture Language
Culture language occurs in two main facets of your program.
You have your sport-specific language: “two feet”, “hunt the paint”, etc.
You have your general culture language: “next play”, “handle hard”, “MUDITA”, etc.
This process is something I help coaches build in the Culture Wins OS.
Here is a jump start:
Pick 5–10 core phrases: Keep them simple and actionable.
Teach what they mean: Don’t assume. Define them clearly.
Use them daily: Practice. Huddles. Film. Conversations.
Hold them accountable: If the words matter, enforce them.
Get players saying them: That’s when culture takes over.
The goal isn’t just for you to say them. It’s for your players to own them and live each day with them.
