šŸ„‡ THE WINNERS CIRCLE
Mike Tomlin: The Standard is the Standard

Mike Tomlin, head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is a living legend in the NFL coaching ranks.

His consistency and leadership have transformed the Steelers into a model of stability and success.

Under his watch, Pittsburgh has never had a losing season in his 17+ years at the helmā€”a streak unmatched in NFL history.

Never.

He is a master of culture, discipline, and resilience.

Tomlinā€™s success can be traced back to his unwavering belief in one mantra:

ā€œThe standard is the standard.ā€

Mike Tomlin

Tomlinā€™s Background

A native of Hampton, Virginia, Mike Tomlin developed a passion for football at an early age.

After playing wide receiver at William & Mary, he quickly transitioned into coaching, starting as a graduate assistant and working his way up through various defensive coaching roles in college and the NFL.

Tomlinā€™s big break came in 2006 when he was hired as the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, where his work earned him a reputation as one of the brightest young minds in the league.

In 2007, the Steelers made him their head coach. At just 35 years old, Tomlin became the youngest head coach in NFL history to win a Super Bowl, leading Pittsburgh to victory in Super Bowl XLIII.

From his first season, he set a tone of excellence that has endured for nearly two decades.

Critical Career Moments

  1. Super Bowl Champion: In just his second year, Tomlin led the Steelers to a Super Bowl victory, defeating the Arizona Cardinals in a thrilling 27-23 game. His calm leadership and ability to rally his team became his hallmark.

  2. The 2020 Season: Despite challenges from COVID-19 and injuries, Tomlin guided the Steelers to a 12-4 record, further cementing his legacy of consistency during adversity.

  3. "The Standard is the Standard": This phrase, often quoted by Tomlin, embodies his coaching philosophy. No matter the obstacles, his teams are expected to perform at a high level. It reflects his belief in preparation, accountability, and adaptability.

One of My Favorites

One of my all-time favorite Mike Tomlin speeches is below.

One famous quote he says is the following: ā€œHEAR MEā€¦It is not what you are capable of; itā€™s what you are willing to do. Plenty of people are capable. Fewer are willing.ā€ - Mike Tomlin

Listen to it below.

What Makes Tomlin Tick?

  • Unwavering Consistency: Tomlinā€™s teams are known for their discipline, focus, and refusal to succumb to excuses.

  • Connection with Players: He builds relationships with his athletes, understanding their strengths, challenges, and motivations. His players know he genuinely cares about them.

  • Master Communicator: Tomlin has a gift for clear, powerful communication. Whether itā€™s a fiery sideline speech or a calm halftime adjustment, his words resonate.

Three Leadership Lessons for Coaches

  1. Set Clear Standards: Tomlinā€™s phrase, ā€œThe standard is the standard,ā€ reminds us that leaders must set high expectations and hold everyone accountable. Action Step: Define your teamā€™s non-negotiables and reinforce them consistently.

  2. Adapt to Challenges: Tomlin thrives in adversity, finding ways to lead his team regardless of injuries, slumps, or external pressures. Action Step: Stay focused on solutions, not problems. Model resilience during difficult times.

  3. Build Trust and Connection: Players thrive when they know their coach cares about them as people. Tomlinā€™s relationships with his team drive loyalty and commitment. Action Step: Have one-on-one conversations with your players to understand their personal and athletic goals.
