The MUDITA Meter: More WE-Go, Less Ego

Think about the kids on your team who are genuinely great teammates.

They may not lead in scoring or stats.

But they lead in something more important:
How they show up for others.

  • They celebrate big plays that they didn’t make.

  • They bring energy from the bench.

  • They put “we” before “me” - every single time.

How do you recognize and celebrate these players?

For us, it’s the Tiger Pride Award, an annual honor we give to the player who best represents what it means to be truly team-first.

Every coach has a few of these kids.

These are the players who have MUDITA!

So…what is MUDITA?

MUDITA is a Sanskrit word that means genuine joy for others’ success, without ego, jealousy, or comparison.

And in team sports, Mudita is a superpower.

It’s showing pure joy when your teammates succeed, even if you had nothing to do with it. Even if it costs you minutes or recognition.

It looks like:

  • ✅ Running to a teammate after they hit a game-winner.

  • ✅ Encouraging someone after a missed shot, even if you wanted their minutes.

  • ✅ Smiling when someone else shines, even if it means you may not have gotten as much playing time.

It’s selfless. It’s rare.

And in a world that celebrates the individual, it’s never been more important to teach.

I first heard the word Mudita from legendary Alabama softball coach Patrick Murphy, who said:

“If you can be as happy for your teammates success as if you did it yourself, the sky is the limit.”

Mudita is contagious.

It builds trust.

And it creates the kind of culture where players want to be their best for each other.
