The Gift You Give Every Day

Christmas morning always brings me back to one simple word:
Gifts.

Not the kind wrapped neatly under a tree.
Not the ones that are torn open in seconds and forgotten by January.
I’m talking about the gifts that last, the ones coaches and leaders quietly give all year long.

Because here’s the truth:

Your presence is a gift.
Your consistency is a gift.
Your leadership is a gift.

And most of the time, you’ll never see the full impact of it.

Somewhere this past year, something you said changed a kid’s confidence.
A tough conversation reset someone’s attitude.
A small moment, one you barely remember, was a turning point for someone else.

That’s the power of coaching and leadership.
It rarely announces itself in real time.

Most of the time, your influence shows up later:

When a kid stands a little taller.
When a team plays for each other.
When a young adult comes back years later and says, “You helped me more than you know.”

That’s a gift.

And it’s not wrapped.
It’s lived.

In a world that’s loud, hurried, and distracted, the rarest gift we can give is presence.

Being fully there.
Fully engaged.
Fully locked in.

It’s easy to forget that the players we coach and the people we lead don’t need us to be perfect.

They need us to be present. They need us to show up with intention, patience, and steadiness, especially on the days when we don’t feel like it.

Presence is the real competitive advantage in leadership. And it’s something every great coach prioritizes.

Every team needs someone steady.
Someone who can take a breath when everyone else is reacting.
Someone whose confidence doesn’t rise and fall with the scoreboard.

Steadiness is a gift.

And if you look back on your year, you’ll notice something:

There were moments you could’ve lost your cool… and you didn’t. Moments you could’ve walked away… but you stayed. Moments you could’ve chosen frustration… but you chose growth instead.

You led anyway.

That’s not small.
That’s leadership.

Every great coach makes belief feel possible.

A kid comes to you unsure.
A parent comes to you frustrated.
An assistant comes to you, overwhelmed.
A teammate comes to you discouraged.

And somehow, through your words, your tone, your example, you make belief feel within reach again.

Belief is a gift. And leaders give it out daily.

So here’s my message on Christmas Day:

Slow down.
Reflect.
Give yourself credit.

You won’t get a trophy for showing up well.
You won’t get a medal for being a steady presence.
You won’t get a plaque for believing in kids who didn’t believe in themselves.

But those are the things that change people.
Those are the things that build culture.
Those are the things that outlast every scoreboard you’ll ever stand in front of.

Today is a good day to remember that.

You matter.
Your work matters.
Your influence matters.

And even if the world doesn’t always say it out loud, someone is grateful for you.

Thank you for leading.
Thank you for giving the kind of gifts that truly last.
