💭 ONE THOUGHT
The Coach in the Mirror

You can draw up the perfect play.
You can post the core values on the wall.
You can talk about discipline every day in practice.

But if your team doesn't see it in you, none of it sticks.

The Hard Truth About Standards

Coaches are great at setting standards for their players.

Show up on time. Give full effort. Hold yourself accountable. Do the work when no one's watching.

But here's the question most coaches won't ask themselves:

Am I doing that?

Because your team is watching you. They always are.

They see when you show up late to film. They notice when you skip the details. They hear what you say, but they remember what you do.

Culture isn't what you post on the wall. It's what you model in the hallway.

Discipline Starts at the Top

Nick Saban didn't build one of the greatest dynasties in college football by accident. He was obsessed, not just with what his players did, but with what he did.

He was first in. Last out. Demanding of himself before he demanded anything from anyone else.

That's not a coincidence. That's the blueprint.

When coaches model the standard, players don't have to be told twice. When coaches don't, no amount of consequence, running, or film session fixes it.

Your team will rise to the level you live at, not the level you lecture at.

3 Questions to Ask Yourself This Week

  1. Am I on time, every time? You can't demand punctuality you don't practice.

  2. Am I giving full effort in the small things? Players notice how you run practice, how you prepare, how you handle adversity on the sideline.

  3. Am I holding myself to the same standard I hold my team? If not, your standards aren't standards. They're suggestions.

The Fix is Simple (Not Easy)

You don't have to be perfect. But you have to be intentional.

The best thing you can do for your team's discipline is to get your own discipline right first. Lead from the front. Live the standard. Let your players see it.

When the coach is locked in, the team locks in. That's how culture gets built. Not in speeches. In behavior.

This Week's Challenge:

Pick one standard you've been asking your team to uphold, and uphold it yourself more rigorously this week. Just one. Watch what happens.

Always remember…

  1. Culture is what you allow.

  2. Culture is what you emphasize.

  3. Culture is everyday.

And it starts with you.

Be great,
Greg

P.S. If you want to stop hoping culture happens and start building it on purpose, the Culture Wins OS is the system for you. It takes your values off the wall and puts them into daily habits that your team actually lives by. Check it out…👇
