💭 ONE THOUGHT
That Jersey Wasn’t Made for You

That jersey was worn before you.
It’ll be worn after you.

Your only job?

Make the next person proud to put it on.

Too many players think the jersey is theirs.

Their minutes.
Their stats.
Their moment.

But great programs see it differently. The jersey isn’t owned. It’s borrowed.

The Shift That Changes Everything

Average players ask: “What can I get out of this?”
Great players ask: “What do I owe this?”

That one shift changes behavior. It changes effort. It changes accountability. It changes how players treat each other.

Because now it’s bigger than them.

It’s not just fabric. It’s:

  • Every player who came before

  • Every standard that was set

  • Every sacrifice that was made

  • Every moment that built the program

When a player puts it on, they’re stepping into something that already matters.

What program does this better than all the rest?

The Problem

Most teams never define this. So players treat the jersey like a t-shirt.
Casual. Replaceable. Temporary.

And when that happens, standards drop.

Effort becomes optional.
Accountability disappears.
Culture becomes inconsistent.

What Great Programs Do?

They make the jersey mean something. They talk about it. They show it. They protect it. They remind players: “You don’t wear this for you.”

You wear it for:

  • The guys who built it

  • The teammates beside you

  • The ones who will come next

This is what culture and tradition are all about.

3 Ways to Build This Into Your Program

1. Tell the Stories: Bring former players back. Share the great moments. Purposefully connect the past to the present. Make it real for your players.

2. Define What It Takes to Wear It: Effort. Attitude. Accountability. Don’t just hand it out. Have it mean something. Make it earned every day.

3. Hold the Standard Publicly: If someone disrespects the jersey or the team… address it immediately. Hold the standard. Because what you allow becomes your culture.

The Truth Is…

Players graduate.
Seasons end.
Records get broken.

But the standard? That stays. Or it doesn’t.

Remind your players that the jersey was worn before them and it’ll be worn after them. The question is simple:

Did they raise the standard or lower it while wearing it?

This is their legacy, and this is your culture.

Be great!
Greg

P.S. If you want to actually build this into your program, not just talk about it, that’s exactly what this Culture Wins OS is designed to do.

It helps you define your standards, create your culture language, celebrate your culture rituals, and build a culture your players are proud to represent, now and long after they’re gone.

Don’t just talk culture. Build it. Live it. WIN with it.
