💭 ONE THOUGHT

Peer Pressure or the Pursuit of Excellence?

Excellence has a price.

A price that many are not willing to pay.

Excellence is hard. Success is hard. Being great at something is hard. It is often defined through years of relentless consistency in daily habits and choices. It is defined through sacrifice, commitment, response to failure, and a never quit mindset.

Excellence is behind the scenes. It is the “iceberg” that is underwater. The “iceberg” that no one sees.

Excellence means having a "No Deposit - No Return" approach to your sport. It is an 'everything is earned' approach to life.

There is no other secret to success.

However, there are some people who fail to recognize or appreciate the cost of excellence. They may not be willing to pay the price themselves. They may be focused on the prize and not the process.

They may get frustrated. They may be inconsistent. Over time they become average. They become mediocre.

Sometimes these people downplay excellence. They make excuses. They may pass off others’ success as "natural talent," "they are just gifted," or "they get everything handed to them," etc.

These people may try to ridicule, knock down, or tease someone for striving to be different, for doing something special, or for striving to EXCEL.

These people can sabotage an individual or a team.

This is negative peer pressure. This is what negative peer pressure does. It strives to bring everyone down to a level of mediocrity.

“From an individual perspective the fight against mediocrity is taxing. It is even more taxing from a leadership perspective where you can’t just take care of yourself, you have to win over the ones around you to follow your example."

Anson Dorrance

This is why Excellence has a Choice.

This is why Leadership has a Choice.

Do I continue with relentless consistency to be great, to be different, to excel? Or do I succumb to the peer pressure that others may put upon me to be like them?

This is a big reason why there are so few athletes that genuinely "EXCEL" at their sport.

This is the exact same reason that leadership fails in teams.

Most people succumb to the mediocrity of negative peer pressure.

Think about it, excellence, just like leadership, always has a choice.

Do I succumb to the PEER PRESSURE that brings me back to average or mediocrity? Or...do I keep working and grinding with daily habits of excellence that will bring my team and myself to another level?

This is the power of negative peer pressure.

People may tear you down, make excuses, blame you, or bring negative energy. They may try to sabotage excellence. Their goals are different.

Avoid these people.

Surround yourself with those who applaud your pursuit of Excellence or Leadership. Surround yourself with positive peer pressure. Surround yourself with encouragers and positive energy.

And always remember, nothing in life comes easy.

Everything is earned.

It is crucial you know this in your pursuit of excellence because you will always have people that may try to knock you down.

You will find out who your true friends are when you dare to be different. When you dare to EXCEL, or when you dare to LEAD.

Those who can handle this are the ones who achieve great things in their sport, in their profession, and in this world.

Choose Excellence. Choose Leadership. Make you and your team better!

Good Luck!
