πŸ’ ONE THOUGHT
A Good Coaching Life

Robert Waldinger gives a powerful Ted Talk on what makes people happy.

It is based on Harvard's longest-running study (75+ years) on adult development, What Makes A Good Life?

The lessons learned in this study can apply to us all, especially as coaches, leaders, and parents.

My ultimate takeaway: People Need People

Here is a quick summary of its application to us as coaches and leaders.

I encourage you to watch the video at the end.

My three key takeaways:

  1. The Power of Relationships: Investing in solid relationships and social connections is the key to a happy and healthy life. As coaches, we must ensure we are relationship-based in all we do. Coaching is a people business. Watch this video of Jason Kelce’s retirement speech to see the importance of relationships in sports. It is about molding and building young people into productive and confident adults. Never forget this.

  2. Isolation and Loneliness: Good relationships and social connections are crucial for happiness, health, and longevity, while loneliness and conflict have negative impacts. This is why kids need team sports! It allows them to be a part of a community. It allows them to be about something bigger than themselves. This is critical in the development of young people, especially with how social media can isolate our kids!

  3. Money vs. People: Millenials surveyed want to be rich or famous. Yet, we know that this does not equate to happiness. People need people. As coaches, we all know the power of being on a team and its impact on us. This is a big reason we all coach.

Coaching is a critical profession, and this study proves it. It proves what we all know.

Being on a team is special. Why? Because it builds community, is centered on relationships, and is about sacrificing ME for WE.

It lays the foundation for the importance of people and relationships. It is why so many people love to watch team sports. They are longing for the human connection of a TEAM.

Our kids need these skills and experiences more than ever.

Continue to advocate for teams, coaching, and the impact it has on the development of our kids.

And choose to coach!
