💭 ONE THOUGHT
Want a Winning Program?

Coaches, do you want a Winning Program?

First, you should ask yourself what a “Losing Program” looks like.

We often need to know what we should NOT do in order to know what we should do.

I have reflected on this, and I believe there are 7 attributes of losing programs.

Think about the teams you have coached and the teams you have played on.

  • Did you have any of these?

  • If so, what caused them?

  • How were they addressed?

  • How did they impact your program culture?

If you are a coach, meet with your coaches and make sure you do not have any of these in your program.

And if you do, make sure you address them right away. If you do not, these attributes can destroy a culture very quickly!

Here are the 7 Attributes of Losing Programs

1: Entitlement - Do your seniors feel entitled to play? Do your seniors feel entitled to lead? Losing programs have entitled players. Everything needs to be earned in sports. Playing time needs to be earned. Leadership needs to be earned. This is your Culture.

2: The Blame Game - Losing programs have a lot of blame to pass around. There is a lack of responsibility. There is finger-pointing as to why the team does not have success. Own it or suffer the consequences of losing.

3: Lack of Discipline - Discipline is doing what has to be done, when it has to be done, and doing it this way all the time. Losing programs lack discipline. You can see it and how they act, how they play, and how they practice. It is sloppy.

4: Lacking Leadership - Losing programs lack leadership. Leadership is from the coach and players. Player lead teams win. One responsibility of the coach is to develop leaders for your team. This is precisely why I have spent countless hours creating the Team Leader OS. To help coaches build and develop their leaders.

5: Complaining: Losing programs have complainers. Complaining creates excuse-makers. Complaining creates negative energy. Complaining creates fixed mindsets and losing programs.

6: Lack of Commitment - Losing programs lack commitment. Players are not bought into the program and do not invest the necessary time in the off-season. This becomes contagious.

I have written about the power of commitment in an earlier post. Check it out.

7: ME > WE - Finally, losing programs have ME First mindsets. Players are worried about their stats. Players are worried about themselves. They are not worried about the team.

Summary:

To have a winning program, one thing to do is look at what losing programs do and make sure you do not do this.

Here are 7 things that are often found in losing programs.

  1. Entitlement

  2. Blame Game

  3. No Discipline

  4. Lacking Leadership

  5. Complaining

  6. Lack of Commitment

  7. ME > WE

Good Luck!
