💭 ONE THOUGHT
Learning from the GOAT

This past week, Nick Saban announced his retirement from Coaching Football at the University of Alabama.

I have long been a huge Saban fan. His consistent winning at the highest level is unique and special.

He is truly the GOAT of College Football.

Check out his retirement interview with ESPN and Rece Davis Here:

I have written a lot about Coach Saban over the years because there is so much to learn.

One of my favorites quotes from Coach Saban is this one:

It definitely takes what it takes. There are no secrets to success. You must put in the work. There is no other way.

Here are 7 of my favorite pieces of wisdom from the GOAT of College Football.

1: “If you want to make everyone happy, don’t be a leader; sell ice cream.”

This one may be my favorite! Leadership is hard. It is earned. It is an inside-out process. If you follow me, you know I have a passion for leadership. That is why I made the Team Leader OS for Coaches and Teams. I have put everything into a system for coaches to build and develop the team leaders on their teams.

2: “Some great leaders in history were not adored but respected. My advice to leaders: Stop trying to please everyone and do what you believe is best.”

Leadership Gold here. Leaders cannot worry about making others happy. They must set the standard for the team. Leaders cannot try to be someone else. Be you and be the best version of you that you can.

3: “There’s two parts of leadership: You’ve got to be a good leader. You’ve got to be somebody that people want to emulate and care about other people. But the other guys that you have have to accept their leadership. They must respond to it. That’s the chemistry that you never know how that is going to happen.”

Who are your leaders? It is critical. Your leaders have to connect with the team and drive the standards. Coach Saban focused on developing his players’ leadership. It is a big reason his teams won.

4: “One thing about championship teams is that they’re resilient. No matter what is thrown at them, no matter how deep the hole, they find a way to bounce back and overcome adversity.”

Champions know precisely how they will respond to adversity. They have learned how to handle the hard stuff better. Coaching is critical here. Prepare your kids for the hard stuff so that when it happens, they are prepared to respond.

5: “Mediocre people hate high achievers, and high achievers hate mediocre people.”

Do not accept mediocrity. Make sure your team leaders do not accept it either. Standards matter. Find high achievers. Grow high achievers.

6: “We’re not going to talk about what we’re going to accomplish. We’re going to talk about how we’re going to do it.”

Focus on the how. How will it be practiced? How will we treat our teammates? How will we react to adversity? How will we win games?

7: “Becoming a champion is not an easy process. It is done by focusing on what it takes to get there and not on getting there.”

Champions focus on the process, not the prize. They know that daily habits drive success. Daily habits and positive energy become contagious to winning.
