💭 ONE THOUGHT

What are the EGBs on your Team?

What are EGBs?

Throughout the 2023 NCAA Basketball tournament, we heard coaches discussing a new term with many people.

EGBs or Energy Generating Behaviors.

What a great term!

As a coach, I have talked about being an “Energy Giver” with our players for many years. We even read a summary of the excellent book, The Energy Bus, by Jon Gordon, before the start of each season.

Negative energy is one thing I do not put up with as a coach. Positive energy is one thing I emphasize almost daily with our team.

It is a culture creator and a non-negotiable for a successful program. I have written about this often on Twitter.

After all, you are what you emphasize, and what gets measured gets done.

In a nutshell, coaches are tracking EGBs because they know they WIN.

They create a culture that we all want in our teams. A culture of positive energy. A culture of support. And a culture with a focus on TEAM. I have written two books on ways for coaches to help build a positive and winning culture: Culture WINS & Culture WINS 2.

I believe the EGB movement all started with Steve Nash and the “touches” study done by Cal-Berkely during the 2006 NBA season.

In a nutshell, Steve Nash was constantly high-fiving, fist-bumping, and slapping his teammates on the back during the NBA season. These were considered “touches,” and his team was winning.

Watch this video from Alan Stein discussing the Steve Nash lesson.

It became so apparent that the Phoenix Suns started to track these touches.

Shortly after, the University of Cal-Berkely did a study on these touches. They discovered that the teams with the most touches throughout the season were also the most successful.

What was learned: Positive Energy WINS.

And here we are in 2023 with the same concept being tracked as s key stat during the 2023 NCAA Basketball Tournament, the EGBs, or Energy Giving Behaviors!

Positive Energy begets Positive Energy.

It is contagious.

And it impacts winning.

What are some Energy Generating behaviors? Here is a list of possible EGBs for a basketball team.

  1. Talking on Defense

  2. Loose ball recovering

  3. Touches

  4. Fist Bumps

  5. Taps on Back

  6. Deflections

  7. Steals

  8. Offensive Rebounds

  9. Defensive Rebounds

  10. Blocked Shots

  11. Contested Shots

  12. Getting a stop on D

  13. Defensive Assists

  14. Charges Drawn

  15. Cheering for teammates when on the bench

  16. Huddles

  17. Pointing to teammates

  18. Recognize and Assist

  19. Gretzky Plays (the play that sets up the play)

  20. Ball Reversals

  21. Extra Passes

Some questions to ask and reflect upon…

  • How can you apply this to your team or sport?

  • What are some other EGBs you can use for your team?

  • How can you measure or track these as stats in a game?

  • How do they correlate to your team's success?

Emphasize EGBs next season. Track EGBs next season. See what happens!

Good Luck!
