💭 ONE THOUGHT
Do You De-Motivate Your Team? 💥

Have you ever done something as a coach that you regretted later?

We have all done it.

It is easy to do.

The most important thing for us as coaches to do is to reflect often and realize when we do it.

That makes it easy to correct, learn from it, and make sure we learn and do not do it again.

This is critical because if you do not address it, you impact your culture—always remember, culture is every day!

It is all about learning and growing as a coach.

Here are 7 Ways Coaches can DE-MOTIVATE their team.

Reflect on these and ask yourself if you have ever done them…

1. Inconsistent Messaging - Frequently changing your expectations, goals, or strategies causes confusion and distrust. It leaves players unsure of what’s expected. Great coaches tend to “overcommunicate” yet speak with clarity with their team. Good communication is critical for coaches. This is why Communication 101 is Module #3 in Better Coach OS.

2. Criticize Publicly - Public humiliation will destroy your team's culture. Great coaches criticize in private and celebrate success in public. This is a golden rule for coaches.

3. Play Favorites - Showing clear favoritism towards certain players will destroy morale. It hurts those who feel overlooked and creates division in the team. Great coaches do not treat all players equally, but they treat all players fairly. They celebrate the value of each role on a team. These are the types of “favorites” you need to play:

4. Neglect Personal Development - Focusing only on winning and ignoring individual growth hurts a culture. Players feel like cogs in a machine rather than valued teammates. Great players can focus on the team while developing the individual. As a coach it is important to find a balance.

5. Overwork Without Rest - Pushing your team beyond its limits without needed rest or positive reinforcement. Remember, in coaching, less is often more. Be conscious of when to push and when to pull. Ask your players.

6. Ignore Team Input - Dismissing players' ideas and feedback creates disengaged players. When players feel their voices aren’t heard, they become less motivated to give their best effort. This is why developing Team Leaders is so important. They are a pipeline to your team.

7. Set Unrealistic Expectations - Demanding perfection or setting unattainable goals creates a mindset of failure. When players constantly fall short of impossible standards, they become discouraged and lose motivation to try.
