🏆 The Courage to Lead
Many people think they “want” to lead.
They want the position. They want the title. They want to be “in charge.”
Or at least they think they do.
They are often infatuated with the “perceived power” or control they want over situations or circumstances.
Until the rubber hits the road.
This is the real test of leadership: when things do not go your way when tough decisions must be made, and when all eyes are on you.
Here is a great story from one of the winningest coaches in the history of basketball, Don Meyer.
Don Meyer - Courageous Leadership
Don Meyer was a highly respected college basketball coach known for his incredible work ethic and commitment to his players. In 2008, Meyer's life took a dramatic turn when he was involved in a near-fatal car accident that resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee.
Despite this life-altering event, Meyer's passion for coaching and his resilience remained unshaken. He returned to coaching, adapting to his new physical limitations. He coached from a wheelchair and continued to inspire his teams with his dedication to the game and his unwavering positive attitude.
Meyer's courage extended beyond the basketball court. He used his experience to motivate and encourage others facing adversity. He became a sought-after motivational speaker, sharing his story of resilience and determination. His ability to find strength in the face of adversity and his commitment to helping others made him a true leader and a symbol of courage.
Don Meyer's legacy is not only defined by his successful coaching career but also by his ability to lead by example, showing that adversity can be overcome with determination, a positive mindset, and the courage to continue pursuing one's passion despite life's challenges.
Don Meyer's story is a testament to the power of courage, resilience, and leadership in the face of adversity.
We need courageous leaders like Don Meyer more than ever.
In today’s world, everyone has an opinion of a coach. They may complain about the play call, the role of players on the team, or the decisions made.
Nick Saban once said...
“If you want to make everyone happy, don’t be a leader; sell ice cream.”
It is so easy to point your fingers at someone else.
But the reality is this: The naysayers do not have the skill set needed to coach or lead others, especially during tough times. They are not willing to take on the responsibility. As Teddy Roosevelt said, they are unwilling to “stand in the arena.”
What does it take to have the Courage to Lead?
Are you willing to stand alone?
Can you make a tough decision?
Will you do what is right?
Can you make the right choice?
Are you able to hold others accountable?
Before anyone steps into a leadership role, whether a coach, a team captain/Leader, or the leader of any organization, they must be willing to ask themselves these very serious questions.
Because some things are certain in leadership…
You will have to stand alone at times.
You will make unpopular decisions and may fracture relationships you have established.
You will be put in positions where you have to be the moral authority for your team or group. You must do “what is right” even when it may be hard.
You will have to make choices that are for the good of the group and not always good for individuals.
You will need to hold others accountable to a standard that has been set.
Leadership is hard, especially in tough times. When these tough times arrive, the leader must step up. All eyes go to the leader.
The great ones rise to the occasion. They Lead. They Inspire.
Leaders need Courage.
Choose to be Courageous.
