๐Ÿ’ญย ONE THOUGHT
The Butterfly Effect

It is March Madness, and the Butterfly Effect is in full effect!

What is the Butterfly Effect?

โ€œThe Butterfly Effectโ€ metaphor demonstrates how a small, seemingly insignificant event can lead to significant results over time.

It is how one small, minor occurrence or choice can cause a ripple effect that changes an entire ecosystem of events.

It happens in sports, OFTEN!

We had this happen in our State Tournament run two weeks ago.

We lost in the State Championship game 72-76.

We were heavy underdogs, but our guys played a great game and had a chance to win or tie with 9 seconds to go. But it didnโ€™t happen.

Still, it was a tremendous run for our team, filled with wonderful memories for our team and community!

But it almost didnโ€™t happen.

In the quarter-final round vs. Pelican Rapids, we were down 5 points with a minute to go. Things did not seem to be going our way.

We had cut it to 3 with under a minute to go. We ran a BLOB that we had been saving for 4 years to run.

It worked.

We got a 3-point play out of it, tied the game, sent the game to overtime, and ultimately won the game by 11.

This win, this play, propelled us to have a great State Tournament run.

This is the Butterfly Effect.

But what if it didnโ€™t work? All of the memories we now have would not have happened, and everything would feel completely different.

One moment in time that almost didnโ€™t happen caused a ripple effect that impacted the ecosystem and created memories for a lifetime.

The same thing happened this past weekend with NC State in the NCAA Tournament.

NC State is in the Final Four!

With a run for the ages.

But it almost didnโ€™t happen.

NC State only made it to the NCAA Tournament because it won the ACC Tournament. It got an automatic bid. It would not have received an at-large bid to the tournament.

Check out this video below. from the ACC Tournament vs. Virginia.

If Virginia makes this free throw, NC State loses, does not make the NCAA Tournament, and these memories do not occur.

Consider how different the NCAA Tournament would have been had that free throw been made.

No NC State.

Who would be in the final four?

This one random occurrence has caused a ripple effect that has changed so many lives.

Appreciate these moments. Appreciate the Butterfly Effect!

So, what can we, as coaches, take away from this?

I think it is two things:

  1. Details Matter: Every small decision we make or every little detail we discuss as coaches really matters. These details set off a chain reaction of other things that happen. This is where I believe we, as coaches, teams, and human beings, create our own luck. When we focus on the little things and the details, we create a ripple effect that allows great things to happen. Practicing that BLOB for four years allowed us to take advantage of the opportunity.

  2. We are part of a Larger Ecosystem. These details and daily decisions can have a huge impact on others or our team and cause a chain reaction. One small gesture today can have a ripple effect that impacts others. One choice or bit of luck can cause a ripple effect that can change our lives. Knowing this lets us appreciate the process and the moments when they come!

Summary:

The Butterfly Effect is a powerful reminder to us all.

March Madness has given us a perfect example of how random occurrences or daily choices can create a ripple effect that changes history and lives forever!

Good Luck!

"My thoughts before a big race are usually pretty simple. I tell myself: Get out of the blocks, run your race, stay relaxed. If you run your race, you'll win... channel your energy. Focus."

Carl Lewis

"When I step onto the court, I don't have to think about anything. If I have a problem off the court, I find that after I play, my mind is clearer and I can come up with a better solution. It's like therapy. It relaxes me and allows me to solve problems."

Michael Jordan
