πŸ’ ONE THOUGHT
8 Keys to a Championship Culture

Culture WINS.

But what is Culture?

I define a team’s culture by asking yourself the following three questions.

  1. What do you Allow?

  2. What do you Emphasize?

  3. Do you do this Every Day?

Once we have defined what culture is, the next step is to reflect and apply these three questions to the 8 Elements of a Championship Culture below.

Reflecting on these eight elements through the lens of what is allowed, what is emphasized, and the consistency at which this occurs will ultimately define your team culture. Reflect on the following:

1: MINDSET & ATTITUDE - Winning Cultures have Positive Attitudes and Growth Mindsets. Ask yourself the following reflective questions.

  • Do I teach through a growth mindset with my players?

  • Do I model a growth mindset?

  • Do I emphasize the power of a positive attitude?

  • Do I allow negative attitudes/actions in our team?

2: TIMELINESS - Being on time is about respect. Respect for your coaches and respect for your teammates. It is about valuing their time as well as yours. Ask yourself the following reflective questions.

  • Do I allow players to be late?

  • Do I follow through?

  • What are the consequences of not being on time?

  • Do I model timeliness myself?

  • Is this a point of emphasis with me each day?

3: COMMUNICATION - Winning cultures communicate well. They are Clear, Concise, and Positive. Ask yourself the following reflective questions.

  • How does my team talk to one another?

  • Do they show respect to everyone?

  • Are these interactions positive?

  • Do I model positive communication?

4: EFFORT & WORK ETHIC - Winning Cultures are Committed and Work Hard. Ask yourself the following reflective questions.

  • What are my expectations for work ethic?

  • How do I encourage and emphasize a culture of commitment?

  • Am I fully committed as a coach?

  • Do I model commitment?

5: INCLUSIVITY & TEAMWORK - In Winning Cultures, ALL team members feel included. There is a true sense of TEAM. Ask yourself the following reflective questions.

  • Do I preach and emphasize the importance of TEAM?

  • Do I meet with Team Leaders about including everyone?

  • Do I show respect and honor to all team members?

6: SPORTSMANSHIP - One good ACT of sportsmanship is way more powerful than ten people talking about it. Ask yourself the following reflective questions.

  • Do I model good sportsmanship as a coach?

  • Do I allow poor sportsmanlike behaviors from your players?

  • Do I reward positive sportsmanship?

  • Am I consistent?

7: PLAYER LEADERSHIP - Player Led Teams WIN. Coaches can either wish and hope for team leaders, or they can work to develop them. This is exactly why I created the Team Leader OS: Coach: The Ultimate Leadership Resource for Coaches. A systemic way for you to build and develop your team leaders year after year. Ask yourself the following reflective questions on how you develop your leaders.

  • What do I do to develop my team leaders?

  • Do I have a plan, or do you wait and wish for team leaders?

  • Do I emphasize Collective Leadership on your team?

  • Do I acknowledge the different types of leaders on your team?

8: ACCOUNTABILITY - All Championship Cultures have Accountability. Ask yourself the following reflective questions.

  • Do I consistently hold your players accountable?

  • Do I have an "everyday" mindset with culture?

  • Do I inadvertently encourage entitlement?

  • Do I model leadership and accountability as the team leader?

Summary:

Culture can be a complicated and dynamic aspect of being a coach and developing a team.

It is critical to simplify the complexity of culture by reflecting on the 8 Keys to Championship Culture by constantly asking yourself:

  1. What do I allow?

  2. What do I emphasize?

  3. Do I do this every day?

By the way, I have written two books about Culture. Culture WINS and Culture WINS 2. Each of these books has 50 ways that coaches can work to build and develop their team culture. Get both eBooks with our BOGO special β†’ Buy One Get One Free. Use the Coupon Code = CULTUREBOGO.

Good Luck!
