💭 ONE THOUGHT
MINDSET MATTERS!
COACHES: Each and every interaction you have with your athletes helps create their Mindset.
Mindset builds Culture.
This is one reason I often say, Culture is Every Day. As coaches, we mold our players and their mindset with each interaction we have with them.
Carol Dweck’s book “Mindset” is a must-have for coaches. I highly recommend getting this book if you do not have it already.
What is Mindset?
Mindset is defined as a person's way of thinking.
Why is mindset so important in sports and for athletes? Because athletics is a constant mental battle.
As Kobe Said in this post below, the biggest battle we all have is with ourselves.

Be Tough. Be Persistent. Be Purposeful. Compete each day with yourself. Leant to master your mind.
“Don’t talk to yourself in a negative way”

Today’s newsletter summarizes the foundations of a Winning Mindset based on Carol Dweck’s research.
Here are 5 Keys to Creating a Winning Mindset with Your Team.
1: Fixed Mindset vs. Growth Mindset
People with fixed mindsets believe that their abilities & intelligence are fixed traits that can't be changed.
People with a growth mindset believe their abilities & intelligence can be developed through hard work, learning, and perseverance.
What do you do in your program to promote a growth mindset?
Our program mantra is “No Deposit - No Return.”
We talk about this often because “We are what we Emphasize.” Our program tries to create this “Everything is Earned” mindset.
Over time, this becomes a culture and expectation that feeds throughout your program.
Winners have a Growth Mindset. Create a Growth Mindset with your Team.
2: The Power of "Not Yet.”
People with a growth mindset view setbacks and failures as opportunities to learn & grow.
They have a ‘failure does not exist” mindset.
They understand that they may not have mastered a skill "yet," but with effort and persistence, they can improve.
They add “yet” to all of their sentences. We are never an end product. We can always learn and grow.
Winning Mindsets add the word “yet” to the end of their sentences. I write about the power of “yet” in my Culture WINS 2 Book.
Try this with your team. Be conscious of using the word “yet.” It can make a big difference in the mindset of your athletes and team.
3: The Power of Praise
Praise Effort. Praise Hard Work.
Do not praise talent or intelligence. It can backfire. It can lead kids to a fixed mindset.
It can lead to entitlement, less risk-taking, and difficulty tackling adversity head-on.
Think about this as a coach. Self-reflect on what you really praise and give feedback on.
Do you praise the process? Do you praise effort?
Praising for effort and hard work encourages them to develop a growth mindset and embrace challenges as learning opportunities.
4: The Role of Self-Talk
Learn the Secret.
Just because you have a negative thought does not mean you must believe it.
What you tell yourself is much more important than what you think.
This may be the most important SUCCESS Tip I have read...
Want to know THE SECRET to Success and Life?
I learned to TALK to myself instead of LISTEN to myself.
Just because you have a negative thought does not mean you have to believe it.

The brain is wired to think negative thoughts. It keeps us alive.
The best players learn to master their minds. They know the mental side of the sport is even more important than the physical side. They can handle pressure situations because of this.
They have learned to talk to themselves when their brain naturally brings negative thoughts into their brain.
Master your Mind with positive self-talk.
Teach your players the power of “The Secret.”
5: Share the Benefits of a Growth Mindset
What are the proven facts and benefits of a growth mindset?
People with a growth mindset are more resilient, persistent, and open to learning. Study after study points to this.
People with growth mindsets are likelier to take risks and try new things.
This will lead to more success and fulfillment in life.
Share this with your team. Change their approach. Change their mindset.
This is why I often say Culture is Every Day.
Each and every interaction you have with your team creates a mindset. It builds culture.
Summary: In summary, the power of having a growth mindset is critical for coaches, athletes, and teams.
Developing a growth mindset with your athletes and team is critical to coaching.
Consider these five keys to creating a winning mindset with your team.
Promote a growth mindset
Use the phrase “not yet.”
Utilize the power of praise.
Promote self-talk with your athletes
Discuss the benefits of a growth mindset with your team
Good Luck!
📜 TWO QUOTES
“Look for ways to redeem the wrong.”
"Leadership is diving for a loose ball, getting the crowd involved, getting other players involved. It's about being able to take it as well as dish it out. That's the only way you're going to get respect from other players."

“Winning is fun...Sure. But winning is not the point. Wanting to win is the point. Not giving up is the point. Never letting up is the point. Never being satisfied with what you've done is the point.”

Failure is a part of the process. Stop trying to avoid it.
You're going to miss shots.
You're going to turn the ball over.
You're opponent is going to score on you.But that doesn't make you a bad player. Instead, be willing to learn and grow from your mistakes.
