ONE THOUGHT...

Want to BE on a GREAT Team?

BE a Great Teammate!

It is pretty simple.

If you approach your role on the team as WE > ME and if you live by the "Echo Theory" - which means "You Get What You Give", then you will get so much more out of being on your team.

You will help the team be more successful, and you will have more success yourself.

You can choose to have a ME-first mindset or a WE-first mindset. And this mindset really matters. This is the essence of a TEAM. Sacrifice your own selfish interests for the betterment of the team.

Great Teams in ALL sports have this.

Even the most Elite Players in the world operate this way.

They focus on "making their teammates better".

They know that when they focus on making their teammates better, it will come back to them 10-Fold.

So...

If you choose to have a WE > ME approach and a WE-first mindset, then your focus can now shift to How Can I BE a Great Teammate?

Here is how you do it. 👇

7 ways to BE a Great Teammate.

1: BE an Energy Giver

Whether it be positive or negative... Energy is contagious.⚡️ Choose positive energy!⚡️ There is something special about teams with great positive energy. You can feel the energy. They win games because of this energy. As a coach, I seek out Energy Givers on our team. They are SOOOO valuable.

2: BE Coachable

Listen with your EYES 👀. Allow yourself to be coached. Coaching is all about communication and feedback. Feedback is how you get better. A team of coachable athletes = a WINNING team🏆.

Accept coaching. The great players do and the great teams do.

3: BE Great at what you are Good at

✅ Know your ROLE

✅ Accept your ROLE

✅ Thrive in your ROLE

Do not try to do something you are not good at. You will stick out like a sore thumb. TEAMS are all about ROLES. KNOW - ACCEPT - THRIVE.

Too many players think the game of basketball is all about scoring. The reality is, that the amount of time you have the ball in your hands is so little over the course of the game. Focus on doing all of the things well when you DO NOT have the ball.

When you focus on being "Great at what you are Good At" you will bring value to the team. When you try to do too much, you will hurt the team and also hurt your opportunity to play more.

4: BE a Teammate that Serves

Serve your teammates. Make them better. If you make THEM better, you make YOU better. You make the TEAM better 🏆.

Live a life of the "ECHO Theory" - You get what you give.

Serve your teammates.

5: BE Trusting

Lou Holtz always said his # rule for teammates was: “CAN I TRUST YOU?” It is that simple. Good teammates have TRUST in each other.

Are you making other right decisions in your sport, in school, and in your social life?

Are you keeping up with your schoolwork and grades?

Do NOT let your teammates down.

This is selfish behavior and can hurt a team tremendously.

Answer the question, Can I Trust You?

6: BE Accountable to your Team

Accountable teammates are accountable to their TEAM. They are accountable to the team Standards. They hold each other accountable.

Make sure you are meeting the team standards. If not, then you are again putting yourself ahead of the team.

7: BE a LEADER!

Finally, Leadership Matters!

🎯 Lead by Example

🎯 Lead Vocally

🎯 Encourage your Teammates

🎯 Hold them Accountable.

Lead Yourself First. Lead by Example.

Be a Servant Leader for your Teammates!

The greatest indicator of Team Success often boils down to player leadership.

Choose to LEAD. Leadership WINS!

There you go! Seven ways for you to BE a Great Teammate! Imagine if we had a full team of players who all followed these rules. Imagine the positive experience we would all have. Imagine the life skills that would be taught. Imagine the team success that would occur.

As a coach, this is always a big challenge. But, is definitely one worth pursuing. Teach, show, and model HOW to be a Great Teammate!
