ONE THOUGHT...
Does "Failure" Exist?
The “Fear of Failure” holds many athletes back. Many are afraid of letting others down, not having success, or not doing what others think they can do.
Why do athletes fear failure?
How do athletes overcome this?
I believe it all has to do with the MINDSET and PERSPECTIVE that a person has toward failure.
Do you believe in failure?
Below are some strategies regarding Mindset and Perspective that coaches can use to discuss "Failure" with their athletes.
1: Failure Does Not Exist
Kobe Bryant once said, “failure does not exist.” He didn’t believe in it.
There is great power in these words.
If you are able to view every negative situation as an opportunity to learn or grow. You never fail. It does not exist. It is a trick you play with your mind.
The great ones learn to master their mind. They are able to shift their mindset on failure.
This is one powerful way to do it. Imagine having the belief inside of you that failure does not exist.
Negative moments are viewed as an opportunity, they are viewed as a positive.
No negatives, all positive.
All about the mindset.
2: Failure is Growth
If “failure does not exist” is too extreme for you, try to approach failure with a “failure is growth" mindset.
Do you have a Fixed or Growth mindset?
Fixed mindsets struggle to overcome adversity. They feel they have no control. When adversity strikes, they often give up or quit.
Growth mindsets view failure as an opportunity to grow.
Choose a Growth mindset. It allows you to have control over what happens to you and control over what you achieve.
3: Next Play
Coach K GOLD 🥇. The best athletes have the ability to move on to the “next play.” They don’t think about the shot they just made OR the bad pass they threw away. They shift to the “next play.”
They play in the moment. They live in the present.
Do not dwell on past mistakes or past successes. Use a "Next Play" mindset to discuss failure with your athletes.
4: Use Examples from Professionals
Hitting .400 in baseball means you “fail” 6/10 times.
Stephen Curry is a career 42.8% from 3-pt. This means he Missed 60% of his 3’s.
Michael Jordan once said in his famous commercial, “I succeed because I have failed over and over.”
Learn from the Elite. They do not make all of their shots. They do not hit the ball 100% of the time.
Bring in examples from the best to nail home the concept of failure for your team.
5: Learn the “SECRET”
Master your Mind. Learn the "Secret" below:
Learn to TALK to yourself instead of LISTEN to yourself.
Just because you have a negative thought, it does not mean you have to believe it.
This may be one of the most important concepts that athletes can master for their own growth and success.
Failure is man-made.
Don’t let yourself believe the thought. Talk yourself out of it.
When you have a negative thought, a thought of failure, talk yourself out of it.
Believe what you say, not what you think.
Self-talk is very powerful.
6: Earn Confidence
Athletes must “Earn the right to be proud and confident.”
When you are confident, you begin to have a different perspective of failure.
But, confidence is earned. It is earned through daily habits, consistency, and persistence.
Earn your Confidence.
Failure is a mental approach; it is a mindset.
Your mindset and approach to how you handle failure will rub off on your athletes.
Whatever approach you take to addressing failure will be incredibly important for your team and for your culture.
Think of Failure as a mindset and watch a shift occur on your team!
TWO QUOTES...
"If you're afraid to fail, then you're probably going to fail." - Kobe Bryant
"Discipline is the highest form of love. If you really love someone, you have to give them the level of discipline they need." – Tom Izzo
