ONE THOUGHT...
DO COACHES PLAY FAVORITES?
YES, Coaches Play Favorites.
Coaches WANT TO WIN!
They spend an inordinate amount of time determining who their “favorites” are. They are constantly evaluating their players, their team, and lineups trying to figure out the best way to win!
What do they look for? What do they see?
They see their team at practice each and every day.
They see their team throughout the off-season.
They see who is committed and who is not.
They see work ethic.
They see the types of habits players create.
They see the mindset that players have.
They see how each player responds in adverse situations.
They see if each player has poise or not.
They see who has the talent needed for the moment.
They see the roles needed on the team and how the pieces fit together.
They see how players treat their teammates.
They see who they can trust. They see who their teammates can trust.
And…they see a whole lot more too.
They use ALL of this knowledge gained to determine who their "favorites" are.
So, who are the "favorites" that coaches play? Here is a list.
#1 FAVORITE: Players they can Trust
Can we trust you? Can we count on you?
These are the top questions that coaches and teammates demand.
If you are not dependable or trustworthy, I don’t care how talented you are, you will struggle to play.
Be trusted and be a “favorite”.
#2 FAVORITE: Players who make the right Plays
Coaches want playmakers.
Do you make winning plays?
You don’t have to score. There are many pieces to make a good team.
If you make the right play at the right time, you will find playing time and be a “favorite”.
#3 FAVORITE: Players who fill a Role
The most talented players don’t always make the best team.
Teams are like puzzles. The pieces have to fit together.
If you can fill a role that the team needs, you can play and be a “favorite”.
#4 FAVORITE: Players who help the team WIN
Coaches want to WIN. If you make plays that help the team WIN, you will play.
What are these winning plays?
Getting loose balls - making hustle plays
Rebounding
Setting screens
Drawing charges
Being a defensive stopper
Making the extra pass
Being a hard cutter
And much more.
Find a job that helps the team WIN and be a “favorite”.
#5 FAVORITE: Players who Work Hard
Want to get noticed? Work harder than everyone.
Coaches will reward consistent hard work.
Hard work is contagious and can impact a team in winning ways.
Work hard, play, and be a “favorite”.
#6 FAVORITE: Players who are Committed
No Deposit - No Return.
Coaches want commitment from their players. Are you Committed?
Do the work. Do the extra work. Show Up. Commit.
Committed Players = Committed Teams.
Committed Teams = Winning Teams.
Be committed and be a “favorite”.
#7 FAVORITE: Players who have Talent
Finally, talent does matter.
You have to have some level of talent to play.
But talent is not everything. There are many talented players who don’t get playing time.
Develop your talent. Use your talent. Be a “favorite”.
Coaches want to WIN. They play kids who give the TEAM the best chance to win.
Do you ever use or hear the phrase "coaches play favorites"?
Coaches - if you hear this phrase, respond with "YES I DO".
And use the list above as a starting point of "WHO" these favorites are.
Good Luck!
TWO QUOTES...
“When you were made a leader, you weren’t given a crown. You were given the responsibility to bring out the best in others” - Jack Welch
“Popcorn is prepared in the same pot, in the same heat, in the same oil, and yet….the kernels do not pop at the same time. Don’t compare your child to others. Their turn to pop is coming!” - Author unknown
THREE TWEETS FROM OTHERS...
Transparency builds trust. Honest communication builds trust. Always sharing the truth builds trust. Being consistent builds trust. Talking about the elephant in the room builds trust

Talent matters. Coaching and tactics matter. So do money and organizational structure. But the key to winning *championships* is culture. And culture is driven by player leadership.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the Rams and Bengals are playing in the Super Bowl.
