Winning Teams have Winning MINDSETS.

They know HOW to Win. They know WHY they Win. Knowing how and why a team wins becomes a competitive advantage. There is a certain way that winning teams carry themselves. They act a certain way, and they compete a certain way. There is a confidence that is not always easy for teams to find.

This confidence becomes a competitive advantage. It is why they win. It is a MINDSET.

Why do some teams find it? Why do some coaches have it? What is it?

Coaching is an incredibly complex process. There is so much to it. I believe that less is more, and simple often wins. Master coaches are able to teach and lead their players to master the MINDSET needed to be successful and consistently win.

How can coaches do this?

Here are 8 ideas coaches can use to help build Winning Mindsets with their players.

1: Competitive Juices

Sport is about Competition -> Coaches need to create competitive players.

  • Competitiveness is a Skill.

  • Competitiveness is a MINDSET.

  • Get the Competitive Juices Flowing.

How do you develop the skill of competition?

Create competitive situations in practice.

Find your Competitors. Challenge them. Play Them. Competition is contagious.

Competitors find ways to win.

2: MUDITA

Mudita is a Buddhist word that means "Vicarious Joy for another person's success." Namely a teammate.

When you have a MINDSET of MUDITA, you have pure JOY for your teammate's success. No jealousy.

Teams who practice Mudita are truly selfless players and selfless teams. They truly care more about team success than individual glory.

Be a team that has MUDITA for each other, and you will have created a mindset that will allow great TEAM Success.

3: Master the Secret

The "Secret" is a Mindset of Self Awareness -> Self Confidence.

The SECRET: Learn to talk to yourself instead of listen to yourself. Just because you have a negative thought does not mean you have to believe it.

Control your Mind -> Control your Outcome.

When players have control over their minds and the negative that can enter them, they are able to flush out the negative and focus on the positive.

The "Secret" is an incredibly powerful Mindset to Master.

4: Approach to Failure

Kobe Bryant said, "Failure does not exist". It is a state of mind.

At the very least -> Failure is Growth.

Do not let Failure affect who you are.

Your mindset on failure determines your approach to life and success.

Ensure your players have a Growth Mindset and a healthy and productive approach to failure and see a change on your team and in your program.

5: "Next Play" Mindset

What you just finished is not nearly as important as what you are doing now.

The best players have a "Next Play" mindset.

They move past success or a bad play in an instant.

They do not dwell. They live in the present.

Coach K came up with the "Next Play" phrase, which is really a mindset. A mindset that can carry over into all facets of one's life.

6: Possession Mentality

"But it was only one possession coach".

Every possession matters. It is a mindset.

Get your players to think about the value of the ball. The value of the possession.

University of Minnesota Football Coach PJ Fleck uses the phrase, "The ball is the program". He has created a mindset that the ball matters and turnovers matter. It is an emphasis of his program each and every day. It has become their culture. For this reason, his teams rarely turn the ball over. It is a mindset that he has created because he emphasizes it each and every day.

You are what you emphasize.

Each game is made up of many plays that could have won the game. Many mistakes are made in games.

Focus on each possession, limit the mistakes, and win.

7: ENERGY Givers

Positive energy is a mindset.

You get what you give. If you GIVE positive energy, you GET positive energy in return.

Players can either be Fountains or Drains. They can exude positive energy and be a fountain for their team. They can also suck and drain the energy out of a team.

Energy is contagious, and winning teams have positive energy.

Be a fountain.

Be an energy giver for your team.

8: Know HOW you Win

Finally, the best teams know HOW and WHY they win.

They have a mindset to WIN the game.

Many players and teams just "play". They think they know how to win, but they don't get the "HOW" to WIN. It is a learned mindset.

What is our HOW? We win games because we do not turn it over much - we value the ball, we take good shots, we compete, and we play tough defense. Our players understand "how" they win. We try to teach the "how".

Teach the HOW.

Teach the WHY.

All of these ideas are Mindsets that can be instilled in a team or a group of individuals. The more your players understand how important their individual mindset is to their individual success as well as the team's success, the more successful a program will be.

Focus on Mastering the Mindset game and watch your team begin to take it to the next level!

Good Luck!
